How to create Rainbow Gradient in Photoshop
Hi friends today we are going to learn how to create a rainbow gradient in photoshop and use it as a gradient effect in a image and text. So friends below is our simple steps what we are going to cover in this making a rainbow gradient in photoshop tutorial.
- Understand what is Rainbow and its colors.
- How to create a gradient group in the gradients library in photoshop.
- How to create a rainbow gradient and save it as a preset.
- How to apply the rainbow gradient to an image.
- How to apply the rainbow gradient to text.
but before get starting, imagine or think about a rainbow, do you exactly remember how its look like, and from which color a rainbow start. How many colors in a rainbow.??
ok no problem lets get dive in
Understand what is Rainbow and its colors.
Rainbow = Rain + Bow
that means we see a multicolor arc in the sky in rainy seasons.
a rainbow has seven colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet).
now i guess you understand what is rainbow (which you already knows) and rainbow colors, and when we see a rainbow we can’t sure from where one color is starting and ending, so exactly its a mixture of colors that why its called rainbow gradient.
here we are sharing a image of color, its RGB Values and Position, which we are going to use in creating our Rainbow Gradient.
How to create a gradient group in gradient library in photoshop.
Before creating a rainbow gradient, we will create a gradient group in gradient panel, that we can name and store it as a preset in gradients panel. By default Photoshop has its own gradients groups divided according to colors. Here we will create our own gradient group to store our custom made rainbow gradient.
Step 1: Open the Gradient panel
when you open photoshop you will see an option bar in your right side, here you can see small icons.
here you will find a gradient panel.
if did not find gradient panel, Go to Window option in Menu Bar and Click on Gradients.
Now your gradients panel is visible in your option bar (right side).
here you will find four categories of colors divided in Colors, Swatches, Gradients and Patterns. When you click on Gradient tab you can see some folder icons names by colors, these are default color Gradient by their names.
Step 2: Open the Gradient panel menu
After clicking on gradient tab, for creating a new gradient group, Click on gradient panel in right side of Patterns Tab.
Step 3: Click on “New Gradient Group”
after clicking on gradient panel menu, you can see a option names “New Gradient Group” Click on it.
Step 4: Name your Gradient Group
Here you can name your gradient group, i did “My Gradients”, you can put similar or choose your own, Click OK.
Now you can see your gradient group in gradients tab in last.
now we have our gradient group, now its time to do our real task, by creating a rainbow gradient.
How to create a rainbow gradient in Photoshop
here we are going to create our rainbow gradient by help of choosing a default gradient and editing its colors.
Step 1: Click on Gradient Tool
Start by selecting Gradient tool in the Toolbar.
you can see gradient tool marked in Red color in toolbar, when you hover on gradient tool, you can see its definition and work in tooltip.
Step 2: Open the Gradient Editor
Click on color bar you are seeing in option bar, its called gradient swatch.
Step 3: Select “Black, White” Gradient.
By click on Gradient swatch you can see an open Gradient Editor dialog box.
here you can see Multiple folder icons like Basics, Blue, purple and many more.
Go in Basics folder and choose Black, White Gradient.
Step 4: Change the first stop black color into Red.
in gradient editor you can see gradient preview bar, here is a mixture of Black and White color.
Click on black color stop, and click on color swatch to change the color
from this color picker tab you can choose Red color by adding its RGB value as shown in Red mark in image.
and set Red color stop location to 0%.
Step 5: Add a new color stop and choose yellow
now we have to add a new color stop for our rainbow second yellow color, you can add a new stop by clicking on blank area near the Red color stop.
after adding a new color stop, click on it and choose color swatch to change the color from Red to Yellow.
and add yellow color RGB value shown in image.
and set the yellow color stop position to 20%.
Step 6: Add another color stop and choose green
now we have two colors in our Gradient color bar. now we have to add green color by adding a new color stop.
click on right side of your yellow color swatch blank area and add a new color stop.
Select new color stop and click on color swatch to change to color.
Add RGB value of yellow to Green color.
and set its location to 40%.
Step 7: Add another color stop and choose Green to Cyan
click on right side of Green color stop and add another color stop to add cyan color in our rainbow gradient.
Select your fourth color stop and click on color swatch and change the RGB value for Cyan color.
Now set your cyan color position to 60%.
Step 8: Add a new color stop and add blue
Now this is our 5th color for our Gradient. Add a new color stop as we are did previously.
Select the color stop and click on color swatch to change the color Cyan to Blue.
Add blue color RGB value and click on OK.
and set its location to 80%.
Step 9: Change the color of White color stop
Now we have 6 color stops, here we only need to change the white color stop color to magenta.
select white color stop
click on color swatch and change the RGB value white to magenta.
and set its location to last 100%.
Now we have added all rainbow color to our Gradient swatch, now its time to save it as a preset.
How to save the rainbow gradient as a preset
Lets save our Rainbow gradient as a preset.
Now select “My Gradient” group which we have created in our first step.
Name the gradient to Rainbow
Click on New.
By clicking on New, you have created and saved your gradient by name of Rainbow in My Gradient Group, You can check and see your Gradient as a preset in Gradients Library.
Congratulations you have created your own rainbow gradient. now we will show you the way to apply rainbow gradient effect to an image, text or shape by simply drag and drop.
How to apply the rainbow gradient to an image
Now we have rainbow gradient and we already saved it as a present, here is time to apply Rainbow Gradient effect on an image.
Step 1 : Open your image in Photoshop
for applying your rainbow gradient effect on an image, first open your image in photoshop by Click on
File Menu > Open > Select your Image > Click on OK
Step 2 : Open Gradients Panel
for applying rainbow effect on image, open Gradients panel to see the Gradient.
Step 3: Go to ‘My Gradients’ Folder
Go to “My Gradients” folder and choose rainbow gradient and drag drop rainbow gradient onto your image.
Drag and drop your Rainbow Gradient onto the image.
after drag and drop Rainbow gradient on image, you can see a gradient fill layer onto the image and you can’t see your image because of temporarily block the image view by upper layer.
But don’t worry nothing is wrong with image and effect.
Step 4: Change the Blend mode of Gradient Fill layer
Go on gradient fill layer and select the layer, and change its layer style or blend mode to overlay.
set its opacity to 40%
or what will give you best rainbow effect as i choose 60%
Now in below image you can see the Rainbow gradient effect in our image.
Step 5: Adjust the Gradient Direction
after applying rainbow gradient effect on an image, you can change its direction or reverse its colors.
Go on Gradient fill layer and click on gradient overlay OR click on Color swatch in gradient fill layer panel.
By clicking on Gradient fill layer color swatch, Gradient Fill dialog box appears,
from here you can change your Gradient Direction, Style, Scale and you can reverse your Gradient colors also.
in this step we have learned how to apply Rainbow gradient effect on an image and change its properties, like its direction, colors and many more.
How to add the rainbow gradient to text
Adding a rainbow gradient effect on Text is almost similar to applying on an image. But here we have more options to edit the gradient option.
Step 1: Drag your Rainbow Gradient onto the Text
Drag drop your Rainbow gradient onto the text from Gradients Panel as shown in below image, but make sure you drop your gradient onto the text not on Black background.
after dragging your gradient onto the text, you can see your text is filled with rainbow gradient effect vertically.
Step 2: Edit the Rainbow Gradient Effect.
After applying gradient effect on text, you can edit it by Gradient Overlay layer effect.
when you apply gradient effect onto the image you got a Gradient Fill option into layers panel above the image, but when you apply this rainbow effect onto the text, you will get a Gradient overlay option on text layer.
by double clicking on gradient overlay, a Layer style box opens. from here you can change your Gradient overlay Blend modes, Opacity, Reverse colors, Style, Angle and scaling also.
after making changes click on OK. (We changed the direction of our Gradient)
You can see your rainbow effect on text is going from left to right means vertically instead of Horizontoly.
In this whole tutorial we know, what is Rainbow and its colors, What is the RGB value of rainbow colors in photoshop, how to create a rainbow gradient in Photoshop from Scratch, how to save it as a preset in Gradients library to use it again and again. after saving it as a gradient, you don’t need to create it again, whenever you need it, you can use it from the gradients panel.
after creating Rainbow gradient and save it as a present, we apply rainbow gradient effect on an image and text also. and we can change and edit in colors, directions and many more things.
I hope you enjoyed it.
